Deutsche Welle Extends Deal With SES AMERICOM to Deliver Global Programming to Audiences Across U.S.
Germany’s international broadcaster depends on effective, affordable digital platform on AMC-1 satellite to reach Germans, Americans, others with global news, information
PRINCETON, NJ – September 8, 2005 – Extending a distribution agreement built on a decade of trust, SES AMERICOM, an SES GLOBAL company (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg stock exchanges: SESG), today announced Deutsche Welle has chosen its DigitalC® platform aboard the AMC-1 satellite to provide the reliable delivery of widely watched programming across America. Deutsche Welle, a German government-sponsored broadcaster, is considered a leading producer and provider of international news and feature coverage, with one of Europe’s most advanced broadcast centers at its headquarters in Bonn, Germany and offices in Washington, DC, Brussels, and Moscow.
Under the multi-year agreement, SES AMERICOM receives DW-TV and DW-Radio content at its Digital Media Center in Woodbine, Maryland, where the content is then processed for affordable digital distribution on the DigitalC platform. Deutsche Welle programming is then uplinked to the AMC-1 spacecraft and delivered to cable headends and ultimately millions of German-, English-, and Spanish-speaking television viewers and radio listeners from coast to coast.
“Deutsche Welle has found a winning combination in SES AMERICOM; effective digital migration and delivery with DigitalC and the reach and reliability of its AMC-1 satellite,” said Horst Scholz, director of transmissions for Deutsche Welle. “Vast and varied audiences across the U.S., from Germans and ex-patriots to Americans and a growing Spanish-speaking population, depend on Deutsche Welle for news and feature broadcasts covering world events. We depend on SES AMERICOM to ensure our programming will be there whenever and wherever our viewers tune in.”
“Deutsche Welle delivers news from home to Germans and ex-patriots living in America, and an alternative global information source for millions of others across the country,” said Carl Capista, vice president of North American media solutions for SES AMERICOM. “Our DigitalC solution makes digital migration and delivery possible for Deutsche Welle and other leading programmers, and audiences across the U.S. are reaping the rewards of quality, reliable programming that’s been distributed over the AMC-1 satellite for nearly a decade.”
SES AMERICOM’s sister company, SES ASTRA, is distributing Deutsche Welle radio and television programming across Europe over its ASTRA satellite system at 19.2° East. “Together, SES AMERICOM and SES ASTRA are providing Deutsche Welle and its millions of listeners and viewers throughout America and Europe with seamless, reliable program distribution,” said Alexander Oudendijk, senior vice president and chief commercial officer for SES ASTRA. “SES satellites are always on to ensure audiences of leading programmers, like Deutsche Welle, can always get the news and information they depend on every day.”
