THE HAGUE, The Netherlands, November 28, 2006 – SES NEW SKIES, an SES GLOBAL company (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock exchange: SESG), announces it has successfully provided special event satellite Internet services supporting RTL Television’s coverage of the Formula 1 Grand Prix races. The German broadcaster has used capacity on the company’s NSS-6 and NSS-7 satellites for high-speed internet access services used onsite by its crew at Grand Prix races around the world. RTL Television Germany, based in Cologne, is the German and RTL group rights-holders for the Formula 1 Grand Prix’s. The broadcasting group covers all nineteen annual Grand Prix races, which the longstanding customer of SES ASTRA compiles into their normal programming and distributes via SES ASTRA’s satellite system at 19.2º East. Typically, sports broadcasters such as RTL Television covering Grand Prix races bring a container complete with archived tapes and file materials of past races, driver biographies, incidents and backgrounders which are used onsite to complement the live video segments, as the entire program is broadcast live from site, complete with graphics and commentary. RTL approached SES NEW SKIES describing their need for a DSL-like service via satellite, which would allow them to download, and view video archive footage stored at their Cologne headquarters during the races. SES NEW SKIES worked closely with the broadcaster through testing to define their exact technical requirements. After analyzing the results, SES NEW SKIES suggested IPsys® DVB/SCPC service as the best solution to meet RTL’s requirements for guaranteed bandwidth. Stefan Flügge from RTL Television’s Sports Production Department said, “At RTL we are constantly striving to improve the way we deliver content to our television viewers. SES NEW SKIES was instrumental in providing us with a cost-effective and efficient solution to support our Sound & Vision crew in producing an even higher quality of programming. We especially appreciated the customized engineering support and flexibility provided to us by SES NEW SKIES.” Samantha McCloskey, SES NEW SKIES’ vice president of special events and occasional-use services, added, “We are honored to be working with a prestigious broadcaster such as RTL Television, which has inspired us to craft a new flavour of our IPsys® service, which is not only perfect for television broadcasters covering live sporting events, but is also great for supporting remote Internet access via satellite for breaking news, disaster relief, live entertainment events and more. Our work with RTL is a further example of our commitment to providing our customers with flexibility and responsive service.”
