SES AMERICOM and AMERICOM Government Services Support Hurricane Katrina Relief and Recovery

September 15, 2005 – Washington, DC – “AMERICOM and AGS are proud to be a part of the critical relief effort for the victims of Katrina by providing urgently needed communications links for relief workers and tent cities. We join with the American corporate community and concerned individuals worldwide in extending our moral support and any material assistance we can provide anywhere and at any time throughout the Gulf region,” said Ed Horowitz, SES AMERICOM’s President and CEO.

As the weather predictions became more dreadful, AMERICOM Government Services (AGS) began to prepare to provide free satellite communications through portable antennas, satellite bandwidth, and systems that enable voice and data communications. AGS systems and services have linked rescue teams with each other and their command centers, provided Internet connectivity, plus voice and data channels, to field hospitals and streamlined communications to relief and rescue workers on the ground, in the air and on the water.

Additionally, AMERICOM is assisting its customers affected by Katrina to recover and replace communications links wherever necessary. This includes everything from equipping a Kentucky provider installing a credit authorization network at fuel and grocery outlets throughout the region, to providing Internet connections, teleport services and bandwidth to a gas pipeline company, and to donating satellite bandwidth to support telecommunications among the National Guard, the U.S. Marines and the Red Cross.

According to David Helfgott, President of AGS, “We are partnering with the Department of Homeland Security and our military forces in a coordinated effort to provide reliable communications among the diverse groups delivering urgently needed relief services to the hundreds of thousands displaced by Katrina.”
